Synopsis
First published in 1905, A Dweller on Two Planets follows Zailm of Caiphul, a miner's son in the capital of Atlantis at the peak of the empire. He has ambition, a secret discovery, and a name worth nothing. Atlantis has a way up for a young man like that. It costs more than he understands.
Around him is a civilization that looks like the future. Flying craft. Voices carried across the empire without wires. Energy pulled from sources the science of 1880 had no words for. Caiphul is not scenery in this novel. It has politics, faith, classes, appetites, and a quiet rot under the marble.
Underneath the machines, a love story, and a tragic one. Two women. Two lives Zailm could have. The novel's own subtitle names what the story is actually about: The Dividing of the Way.
The question the book asks is the one that keeps it current. What happens to a civilization when its technological power advances faster than its wisdom?
The World
Atlantis here is not a ruin and not a legend. It is a working society at its height, engineered, confident, and certain of itself. Cineira is developing it as a world an audience believes because it functions, not because it dazzles.
The approach is simple to say and hard to execute. Every element of the world earns its place by pressing on somebody. Scale is not the point. Consequence is.
